| Abstract | A study on market information needs and environment of small and medium businesses (SMBs) in Vietnam remained untouched. This research study tries first, to propose a definition of SMBs, then to assess the statusquo of the market information environment, based on that, to assess the market information needs, finnally to propose alternatives to bridge the "gap" between needs and accessability for SMBs in HCM City. By analysis of differences, characteristics between small and medium firms as well as between SMBs in service and manufaturing found interestingly different. Both SMBs used informal market information intensively but medium firms used more formal for longer term decision. The proposed definition was applicable for 75% of cases. By discriminant analysis, market related information variables were found usable as significant discriminatiors to define SMBs. The study recommended that information agencies should target their market on specific segments in order to know their customers1 needs and to serve them better. A generic marketing scheme was recommended for an information consulting service firm which was or is going to operate |
