AbstractThe work presented in this dissertation is a detailed study on the performance of several trial embankments at the Muar flat site in Malaysia. The Immediate and the creep components of settlements during the loading and the consolidation stages respectively were delineated using Field Deformation Analysis (FDA). Normalised equations are formulated from these settlement components with special attention given to creep which is very important in predicting long term settlement behavior of high embankments. The Finite Element Method (FEM) of analysis was performed to predict the behavior of nine embankments treated with various ground improvement techniques. These analyses were carried out using CRISP, computer program, which bears many soil constitutive models, the modified Cam-clay model inclusive. 1-D axisymmetric finite element analyses were performed for six embankments namely, two control embankments, two embankments treated with electrochemical injection and also two embankments with prefabricated vertical drains. For embankments with vertical drains, the finite element mesh of a single drain used takes into consideration well resistance and also smear effect. From these analyses, the long term behavior and the effectiveness of the ground improvement techniques used were also evaluated. Predictions of the deformation behavior of three embankments were then carried out in 2-D plane strain condition. For the embankment with the sand sandwich, the influence of the sand layer on the deformation characteristics was also studied. In the analysis of the embankment treated with electro-osmosis, negative pore pressures introduced at the anodes are able to simulate the process of electro-osmosis treatment. The electro-osmotic suction applied during the analysis was also varied to study the effect of electro-osmosis on the deformation behavior of the embankment. The prediction of the embankment treated with the vacuum preloading and prefabricated vertical drains was conducted in two cases, one with the vacuum suction and the other without, to estimate the effectiveness of vacuum preloading. All these embankments behavior showed good matching of the measured settlement values with the calculated values when creep is considered.
