Abstract | The determination of in-situ soil properties is often required for soil engineers to study the improvement techniques of weak soils. The coefficient of consolidation in the horizontal direction is one of the important in-situ parameters which is determined in this research by usin g piezoprobe dissipation test with the pore pressure measuring element at two locations: ( 1) just behind the cone and (2) 10 radii above cone tip. A Test Site A at Asian Institute of Technology was selected and eighty three (83) piezoprobe dissipation tests were carried out. The coefficient of consolidation in the horizontal direction was determined by matchin g the theoretical and experimental pore pressure dissipation curves. A number of conventional oedometer and index tests were performed with samples collected from the selected site for comparison the profiles of coefficient of consolidation in the horizontal direction. Very consistent and repeating values of the ratio of the coefficient of consolidation in the horizontal to vertical directions were obtained in the range of 2 to 5 for the soil layer at depths of from 4.0 to 7 .Om. |
