AbstractThe influence of shearing time on the undrained shear strength and other soil properties were studied experimentally under Strain controlled and Stress controlled conditions. Total eighteen (18) triaxial tests were performed in three test series such that six (6) samples were tested under Strain controlled condition, six (6) samples were tested under Stress controlled condition and the remaining were performed under Undrained creep condition. The samples were consolidated at K0 condition and shearing was performed only in compression mode. Test results of this study include soil properties, consolidation characteristics and stessstrain-time behavior of soft Bangkok clay. The compression curves obtained from this study are in close agreement with the 1-D consolidation data presented by HASSAN (1993). The preconsolidation pressures and compression ratios are in good agreement with the previous data. Test results show that the undrained compressive shear strength of Bangkok clay increases 12 % per log cycle increase in Strain Rate. This result is in agreement with the data reported by BJERRUM (1969). Stress controlled condition gives about 15% higher strength than strain controlled condition. The time dependent strain of Bangkok clay can be predicted by using SEMPLE's (1973) creep equation.
