| Abstract | This study was carried out to study how financing is actually talcing place in telecommunications sector in India. It also tried to find the issues faced in financing such huge investments by the private operators. Lessons from international experience of telecom financing especially in the developing Asian countries were discussed in India's context. Finally a case study was done on a actual financing by a telecom company in the liberalized environment. The data collection was done on the basis of interviews of CEO's and managers both in Thailand and in India. It is found that the investments in the coming ten years will be very high and there will be a heavy competition for funds within the domestic as well as international capital market. This requires that the companies understand the capital market very well and Government of India encourage investment opportunities by creating conditions for the development of the domestic capital market. Financial Institutions have to play a major role in mobilizing funds by developing new financial instruments. It is also felt that project financing and leasing will be the main forte for financing telecommunications in India in the near future. |
