AbstractAfter necessary modifications in the AMRI sugarcane planter, the modified AMRI sugarcane planter and FMI sugarcane planter were tested to evaluate their economic and field performance to specify the optimum operating conditions in Pakistan. The optimum speeds were determined as 1.25 km/h and 2.65 km/h for the FMI sugarcane planter and AMRI sugarcane planter respectively. The both planters were evaluated at the three farms in Faisalabad District and their performances were compared with the manual planting at the same farms. Average effective field capacity was found as 1.04 ha/day for the FMI sugarcane planter and 1.68 ha/day for the AMRI sugarcane planter. Average field efficiency for the FMI planter and for AMRI planter was 64.5% and 34.8% respectively. At present wage levels and cost of machinery in Pakistan, the FMI planter and AMRI planter have break even points at 6.5 ha and 4 ha respectively. It is concluded that the AMRI sugarcane planter is a useful time, labor and money saving device but machine needs some modifications for its more economical and effective use. For the effective and economical use of the FMI planter, a simple mechanical set cutting machine should be developed in the country to use with this machine.
