AbstractThis stud y is to assess t he local people's capabilities in forest management under the people's initiated project, namely, "Human Beings in love with the Forest" which is aimed to recommend guidelines for decentralized forest management. The project is a tool to solve connects over use and control of forest land between local people a nd t he local government in t he Forest Reserves Area, namely, "Dong Mae Phecl". The specific objectives of this research were concerned with analyzing the management practices of forest, identifying an appropriate local people's organization for forest management, identifying scopes a nd factors influencing on people's participation in forest management actives, a nd studying factors contributing to the success or failure of local people's management. This research was undertaken by using a case study a nd a field survey approach covering exploratory descriptions. Both traditional a n d people's initiated projects of forest management existed which provided ecological and economical benefits to rural people. Local forest management systems were well practiced because of active local organization a nd powerful leaders. Most of promoted local organizations were not effective due to lack of supports from the local government. There was a need to integrate both promoted and natural local organization s in order to undertake rural development activities effectively. People's participation jn forest management activities was mainly encouraged by local leaders a nd community cohesion. However, rural people have limitations of technical knowledge. Finally, model of conservation network, a nd guidelines for community-based forest management, a nd stimulating and sustaining people's participation in forest management, as well as for other rural development activities, were recommend ed.
