AbstractThe significance of marine transportation in world trade became more prominent with the introduction of containers. The port, transport terminal in this mode, consists of more complex activities than any other, where overall efficiency is a complicated function of several factors. Therefore, application of modeling and simulation as a tool in decision making becomes very important. Recent growth of containerization in Asian region is largely due to the development of feeder service networks connecting smaller ports with hub ports which get the service from main line vessels . Due to its favorable location, Port of Colombo is experiencing rapidly and steadily increasing container traffic, making it an important transhipment port in the region. Colombo port which is operating at its capacity at the moment , has the potential to be in great demand in the future. Without necessary actions to improve container handling efficiency, resulting port congestion will create economic losses not only to the country but also to the region as well. Hence, the purpose of this study was to find the possible ways of improving the container handling efficiency. Two models were developed using General Purpose Simulation System (GPSS ) to represent the ship turn around time and the flow of containers within the terminal, and the critical factors that should be paid attention for improving the container handling efficiency were identified. Possible remedial measures were included to the developed model and simulation was carried out to find the outcomes of implementing them. According to the findings, changing the present shift system at Port of Colombo , increasing the Gantry Crane productivity and constructing more berths, were among the highlights in improving the container handling efficiency at Port of Colombo.
