AbstractIn recent years, Metro Cebu has been experiencing the same l\ind of problems most developing countries have. Increase in population has lead to increase in transportation demand which are not met by the existing transportation systems. In many cities, the different kinds of paratransit mode have played a s ignificant role in absorbing t h e demand. However, most of t hese are take n for granted. In Metro Cebu , although there are many other types of informal transportation system, the jeepney has served as the only major form of public t ransportation for many years. The objective of t h is study is to determine the role played by the jeepney in t he public transportation industry and present characteristics as well the changes in the f uture assuming some factors which might affect its operation. Present condition s hows that it is stil l the major form of public transportation i n Metro Cebu . It is used by many peop l e for a ll types of trips. It h as a wide coverage, covering the whoh) area with 20 major routes. Lil<:e most paratransit vehicles , mos t of the j eepneys are rented. Operating conditions show mo s t are diesel operated and h as provide long operating service. Financial condition shows the gross revenue and expenses differ according to the distance. The jeepney driver income of 111 pesos per day is not so high, considering t h e average operating hours of 15, although, it i s near the present minimum wage l evel. Regulation and control government are controlling characteristics of j eepney. of j eepney some of shows the that the operating Increase in passenger income will adverse effect on the drivers for a l l types of routes. To balance the effect, the fare has to be increased also in order for the drivers to survive. Introduction of ne w bus routes also seems to affect the some routes but the res ults.
