Abstract | Three signalized intersections in Bangkok were studied to evaluate the possible improvements of the present signal controlling system based on the delay, fuel consumption and user cost. Three intersections were chosen for the study with three different phasing control types such as two, three and four phases. Data were collected by video cameras during morning , evening and off- peak periods. Regression models were developed to evaluate the intersections' delay and percentage of stopping variation with the cycle time. User cost analysis was also performed by considering the costs for delay, excess fuel consumption and number of stopping. Furthermore, the simulation package SOAP84 was ยท used to determine design cycle time and thus, comparisons were made with the existing cycle time of these intersections . Results showed that existing intersections control system could be improved by changing the present cycle time to a designed its optimum value. The results also revealed that the current cycle time controlled manually by the police is longer than the appropriate cycle length. The improvement were identified by reduction in delay , excess fuel consumption and maximum queue length. Finally, a most suitable cycle and phasing time were computed and recommended for these three intersections. |
