| Abstract | In June 1992, an international project tender to construct a recovery boiler plant for a pulp manufacturer in Thailand was concealed to a Finnish based industrial corporation. The implementation of the project was meant to carry out as a turn key bases, where the contractor should be responsible of the total detailed design, manufacturing, erection, commissioning of the plant and training. In this research an attempts are made to describe and analyze the process of sourcing, qualification and selection of Thai steel structure contractors to act as a local subcontractors for the Finnish industrial corporation during the implementation of the project. Individual factors effecting for the each stage of the process have been identified and explained. Several mainly culture, language and infrastructure related problems were faced. None of them were insuperable, only plenty of time , patience and personal flexibility were needed. Until the present times the domestic markets for the local steel structure contractors in Thailand have been growing rapidly, and there are plenty of companies which are well equipped to produce quality parts to modern standards. Anyway to reach the highest standards more quality consciousness and modern manufacturing technologies will be needed. |
