AbstractThe ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) intends to strengthen. the capabilities of ASEAN region in the long term. Some industries are inevitably experiencing adverse consequences during the transition period. Plastic group of products is one of the most critical issues for Thailand. Firms in the industry need to know what the implications of AFTA are going to be. This study involves themes derived from the theory of economic integration and strategic management. Because of conflicting interests in the industry, the effects are examined by comparing those themes between Thai producers ofplastic resins and plastic products. Some product lines are presented as examples in the study. The results show that a firm's perception of the industrial situation and of the likely impacts of the ASEAN Free Trade Area influence its responses to the economic integration of the region.
