Abstract | This study aims at developing a comprehensive framework for the assessment of both explicit and intended implicit manufacturing strategies of a manufacturing organization. It can thus, be applied to both the developed as well as developing country manufacturing organizations. The framework is applied to a large manufacturing organization in Pakistan. The conclusions drawn from the application of the framework revealed that the companies of the developing countries operating under protected markets for extensive periods, do not practice strategic management in general like developing corporate or business strategies. Their intended implicit manufacturing strategies also lack the necessary consistency of act11al manufacturing management practices and the role manufacturing should perform to support existing business. This role of numufactw'ing is assessed through the perception of executives of the company. The methodology used was questionnaires imd interviews. The manufacturing management practices were also assessed through secondary data and interviews. However, the initially proposed framework showed some limitations in the use of eight manufactnring management factors used to assess tl1e manufacturing management practices. These factors did. not cover the costing system and the use of computers. A modified framework is suggested replacing the eight factors with the four components of technology, Technoware, Humanware, Infoware and Orgaware. These are must broader concepts and can help in covering all aspects of mimufacttrring management practices. |
