Abstract | This study examines the degree to which expatriate managers' adaptational difficulties in a foreign culture are influenced by the cultural patterns they encounter in the host country vis-avis the culturally learned patterns expatriates carry with them as members of their home cultures. This was carried out using HAMMER'S MODEL of intercultural effectiveness. The research focused on the adaptation of French managers to Germany, German managers to France and both French and German managers to the Philippines. HOFSTEDE's work was used as the theoretical basis for selecting the countries. Results indicate that French and German managers differ significantly in their attitudinal satisfaction with living in a foreign culture, perce~ved effectiveness in functioning well in a foreign culture, communicating effectively and developing satisfying interpersonal relationships in a foreign ·culture. These findings support the notion that the cultural background of the expatriate manager may be more important than the particular country specific environment in influencing cross-cultural adap. |
