Abstract | The recently concluded "Investment Forum - 1992" in Kathmandu and the government's amended laws on "Foreign Investment Policy" and " One-Window System 1992" is aimed at boosting the economic development of Nepal through increased foreign investment. It is in this context that joint ventures in Nepal are rapidly on the increase, though they are relatively still a new phenomena in the Nepalese industry. There are however many problems that these joint venture partners face during establishment and subsequent operation of their businesses in the country. In this research, an attempt has been made to identify and analyze the key issues related to the establishment and operation of joint ventures in Nepal. Based on a comprehensive literature review of problems faced in establishing and operating joint ventures, an analytical framework has been devised for analyzing the problems and issues associated with joint venture establishment and operation in Nepal. Further, a structured questionnaire has been developed based upon the framework, for collecting field data to study the relevance of problems stated in the framework. According to the findings of this research the problems of joint venture establishment, and operations are chiefly related to the unfavorable exchange rates, high cost of capital, and limited human resources (especially skilled technical and managerial personnel). The problems pertaining to the host country environment are mainly due to the poor industrial infrastructure (especially electricity, roads and railways), lack of technological information services, and high taxation policies. Some guidelines to foreign and local investors have been suggested to facilitate successful joint venture establishment and operations in Nepal. The sincere implementation of the privileges and facilitating technical/managerial training for personnel so as to enable them to adapt to new challenges should be the stance of the government. Suggestions for further research have also been made. |
