AbstractThis research presents an investigation into the performance of direct-sequence (OS) spread-spectrum multiple-access (SSMA) communications over a fading radio channel. Three types of fading channels are considered; a Rayleigh fading channel, a Rici.an fading channel and a Lognormal fading channel. For each type of channel a complex lowpass impulse response is used based on either GSM recommended data or indoor wireless measurements at 910 MHz. In addition, a basic channel model is proposed for estimating the number of multipaths associated with different radio environments. The fundamental BER performance of a DS/SSMA communication system is assessed for these channel models and the improvement in performance obtained using selection diversity and majority logic combining diversity in a RAKE receiver are investigated. In addition to diversity techniques the performance improvement obtained by using forward error correction channel coding is investigated. The results demonstrated that broadband DS/SSMA systems employing selection diversity RAKE receivers and half rate channel coding can achieve an acceptable performance over a wide range of cellular mobile channels. The analytical results obtained are verified by simulation.
