| Abstract | Technology transfer from developed countries (DC's) to less developed countries (LDC's) has received increased attention as can be seen from the numerous publications in this area. It has been proved beyond doubt that appropriate technology transfer can act as a catalyst in LDC's to enhance economic development and growth. In this regard Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) has come to play a major role in stimulating the LDC's economies by providing much needed technical know-how, upgradation of local technological capabilities, foreign exchange, employment etc. One of the most popular forms of FDI widely used by DC's to transfer technology is the international joint venture. Despite the popularity of international joint ventures as a mechanism for technology transfer, a review of the literature indicates that the formation and operation of joint ventures are not free from problems and difficulties. It appears that a detailed investigation of this aspect, based on the literature review and case studies focusing on the common problems faced in the management of international joint ventures, with special emphasis on technology transfer issues will be useful to both LDC and DC firms. In this study, based on a detailed literature review, an analytical framework has been developed in order to address the problems/issues in the establishment and operation of international joint ventures. It is seen that the degree of success of a joint venture is dependent on four main issues namely: process of formation; motivation of partners; management of the joint venture; and host country/government issues. Based on this analytical framework a questionnaire has been developed.This questionnaire was administered to the partners in two selected Norwegian - Thai international joint ventures to examine the significance of the problems faced with regard to these four issues. Based on the information gained an attempt has been made to prioritize the criticality of the problems faced and suggest possible solutions for overcoming these. Lastly, based on the findings from the two case studies, recommendations have been made to the foreign partner, local partner, and host country/government in order to facilitate the smooth operation and the performance of the joint venture. Suggestions for further research have also been made. |
