AbstractMuch of the earth's ecosystem has been deteriorating as a result of human disturbances. Deforestation is one of the impacts of man's activities. Various environmental problems like land degradation, erosion and changes in climate have transpired due to this. To avert further damage to the ecosystem, it is important to evaluate the terrestrial ecosystem and come up with a suitable area for reforestation in order to address that problem. Evaluation of the terrestrial ecosystem involves the integration and analysis of geographic data from various data sources. This study assesses the suitability area for reforestation in the ASEAN region using global data set from Murai Laboratory, Japan. An evaluation model has been developed for this purpose. The application of Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques in the implementation of the model is presented and described. The results are obtained in relation to the methods of evaluation used. It showed that the ASEAN region is likely to be a suitable place for reforestation. The study concludes that the evaluation model, with the aid of GIS, is beneficial to environmentalists and planners in attending to the problems caused by human activities. GIS is indeed a useful tool for geographical studies and evaluation of environmental problems involving the integration of geographic data from various sources.
