AbstractThe study describes an algorithm that is different from solid geometry modeling approach but based on the concept of a space sweep to verify 5-axis machined surfaces. The algorithm uses a cylinder to represent a milling cutter. By positioning and orienting the cylinder according to Cutter Location (CL) data, a method of calculating the intersection of the cylinder with the sweep plane was developed and then an algorithm used for determining the intersection of the results of the preceding step was also proposed. Finally, the masking technique was used as surface (line) hidden method for graphics display of the final part. The proposed algorithm was implemented in C language on the HP system with PHIGS graphics package. A user interface based on pull down menu and mouse interaction was developed. An existing collision detection algorithm implementation was ported from the SunCore graphics environment to the HP PHIGS graphics environment as well.
