AbstractThe tyre industry in Indollesia is interesting to analyze, as supply cotulitiotls are challgillg rapidly. There are currelltly sevell tyre compallies atul there will be two new entrallts in 1994. At the same time, four ofthe largest compallies will illcrease their capacity. Given the large excess supply of tyres already in Indotlesia, these new developmellts will further exacerbate the supply problem. By considering the itlcrease of population, and illcome, particularly ill Jakarta, in the future demand of cars will illcrease as well as demand of tyres. On the other hatul, demand of tyres ill replacemellt market will illcrease cumulatively. In auxiliary material suppliers particularly syllthetic rubber, there will be some new elltrants which will change their bargaining power. Fonnerly, tyre companies have had dependence on foreign suppliers. In line with its evolution, the tyre structure will change, because its detenllinallts will change as well. As there are many tyre compallies, compe- tition will be fiercer. Each compally not only compete amollg them, but agaillst buyers, suppliers' power, flew entrants atul substitute as well, if available. These five forces are detem1ina1zts whether industry is attractive or not. This study analyzes the structure ofthe tyre itulustry in Itulonesia, presents the perfomzance of intirub based on its curretlt strategy a1ul 11zarket segmentation, and we propose another approach to segmellt tire markets/buyers. We will present some conclusions.
