AbstractIn an increasingly competitive, sophisticated and global market, companies are seeking to differentiate themselves from their competitors by offering goods and services of a superior quality at an affordable price. However, since 1987, the quest for quality has taken on more concrete parameters in the shape of an internationally-recognised series of quality assurance standards-the ISO 9000 series. The standards required for achieving registration to the ISO 9000 series are rigorous, and involve streamlining an organization's management and administrative systems and structures in order to meet well-defined and stringent requirements, whereby more than 50 countries have adopted it as their national standard already. We have to deeply committed to achieving ISO 9000-registration in order to compete in the global market. Part of this commitment is to promote the concept of ISO 9000 which is the r~son why the author recently conducted a survey into perception of, attitudes to, the ISO 9000 quality series among some of the most senior corporate decision-makers of Indonesia in order to the ISO 9000 Quality Assurance Standard Series Implememtation. This paper summaries the results of the research and gives a unique insight into "reality of ISO 9000" through the eyes of some of Indonesia's leading companies. The conclusions serve to underline the increasing importance which organisations attach to the concept of quality and the high profile of the ISO 9000 series of quality standards.
