AbstractIn this study, household energy demand in Vietnam in the past, the present and the future was analyzed at micro and macro levels. In the past, it was found that household heavily relied on traditional energy sources, accounted for 95 % of energy used in households. Some past trends of energy consumption were provided in terms of tabular, balance and regression equations. At present, analysis was based on household energy survey in four provinces. Energy consumption patterns in households by fuel sources and by end-use was analysized. Income effect on energy consumption was also analyzed. It was found that proportion of energy devoted to cooking declines as income rises. In the future, energy demand forecast in the years 1995, 2000, 2005 was made, using MEDEE_S Model with four economic and energy policy scenarios. Total household energy demand could increase around 2. 7 % annual during forecasting period from 11, 300 ktoe in base year 1989. It was found that energy demand in the future is sensitive to new energy policy towards the ·improvement of efficiency of cooking stoves due to dominance of traditional fuel used in households.
