AbstractMa hasarakham claystone residual so i 1 in Khon Kaen area were inves ti ga t ed with respect to the ir minera log i ca l, chemi ca l, and eng inee ring properties and how these factors are affected by weathering processes. The genera l ized weathering profile of c lays tone in the st udy area cons i sts of mott l ed zo ne, pallid zone , and saprolit e zone. The montmo ri llonit e is the ma j or c l ay minera l and the kaolinite and illit e are the minor c l ay minera l s . In plasticity chart, the c l ay content of resi dua l soi l s which are dominated by montmori llonit e were plotted a l ong the A- line . In the act i v it y chart, the clay con t ent and plasticity index was plotted in normal act ivit y zone. In the c lass ifi ca ti on chart for swe lling pot enti a l, the residual soi l were plotted in low to medium swe lling potential.
