AbstractFor automated process planning and manufacture the requirement of the day, is to integrate all manufacturing functions, from design to manufacturing, and then to move towards the ultimate goal of computer integrated manufacturing, i.e. to integrate all functions from design visualization to manufacturing of part. The very first step after design towards manufacturing is the interpretation of design information by process planning softwares. Here a framework for development of a totally integrated process planning system to provide an interface for integrating the CAD and CAM functions through CAPP functions for rotational components having external features is presented. A manufacturing based CAD software for axis symmetric rotational components is presented which provides integration of CAD and CAM tools to the fullest extent. The CAD data is transferred to Object oriented environment for postprocessing and interpretation. Object oriented environment is best suited when feature based approach is used for representation of parts. Extraction of machinable volumes, setup planning, sequencing of operations, and NC program generation are also done in object oriented environment.
