AbstractThe opencast coal and clay mines in Ban Mae Than Village, Mae Tha District, Lampang Province cover approximately 18.9 km2 (11,806 rais). Within a radius of 3 km of the mines, there are approximately 6,000 persons in 7 villages. The waste dumping and material transportation of the mines are the mining activit ies that mainly generate several adverse effects to the envi ronment. The most severe adverse impacts are the impact on public opinion and air quali ty. The former can be mitigated by winning the trust of the villagers, arranging the publicity campaign, and relying on the sincerity and good deeds. The latter can be reduced by controlling the coal spontaneous combustion and arresting the dust from transportation. The second detrimental impacts are n oise and degraded surface water. Noise can be decreased by appropriate dumping practices, establishing sound barriers, and frequent grading or paving the haulage road. The degraded surface water can be mitigated by making more settling ponds and revegetat ing all barren areas. The most beneficial impact of the mining is the employment of the local people. However, the economic decline of the local residents after the mining termination should be considered in the rehabilitation plan.
