AbstractThree approaches namely empirical, analytical and ob servational were made use of for the expl oratory tunnel of the Lam Ta Khong Pumped Storage Project to yield information on ground conditions , rock mass properties and support requirements etc. Engineering geological mapping along the exploratory tunnel was carried out that he lped classify the rock mass according to the most popular c l assification s ystems such as RMR and Q. The rock mass turned out to b e mostly of fair q ua lit y and even good quality for sandstone at the designed Powerhouse depth. Some rock mass properties such as rock mass deformation modulus, cohesion and internal friction angl e, Hoek and Brown ' s m ands values etc were approximated. Support requirements were then estimated that appeared to be comparabl e with the actually installed ones . Ground convergence was monitored and the collected data were a nalyzed, interpreted and the rock mass modulus of d eformation was back calculated. The rock mass showed time-depend ent b ehavior but the convergence rate decreased with time that implied creep was not likely its reason . The estimated convergence was less than the lowermost threshold for squeezing ground. Ground responses were observed and several types were identified such as loosening, slaking , swelling, stress s l abbing , delayed fracturing e t c. Loosening was most prominent as f a ilure was governed both by discontin uity s y stems and the weak roe ]{ mass its e lf . Slaking though being very drastic outside the tunnel was not so severe insid e . Stress slabbing including delayed one with depth became noticeable due to excessive stress/strength ratio. Strength weakening o f the rock mass was due to several factors that s uggested the rock mass s hould not be left uncovered. The excavation and s upport i nstallation practice was described, the performance of several support t ypes was h igh lighted and the use of s ystem rockbolt and shotcrete was proved to be most s uitable .
