AbstractNon-motorized transport (NMT) plays a vital role in Surakarta, Indonesia. Characteristics of non-motorized transport have much effect on this city's transportation system. This study focuses on these NMT characteristics, particularly the bicycles and becaks in Surakarta. To determine the speed studies, photographic technique was used and to identify the users characteristics, questionnaire surveys were carried out. Bicycle speeds were determined as well as bicycle riders characteristics were identified. In case of becak, becak speeds were determined and becak users, drivers and owners characteristics were examined. The results revealed that male riders have significantly higher riding speeds than that of female riders. It was found that bicycle facilities have no impact on neither bicycles nor becaks speeds. Bicycles speeds on the exclusive path and mixed lane were 11. 87 kph and 11.8 kph, respectively. Becak speeds were also found almost similar in both the cases, becak path (10.49 kph) and mixed path (10.45 kph). Nonetheless, bicycle speeds were higher than becak speeds. Bicycle was the most favored mode among students, whereas females and elder people preferred to use becak. According to the questionnaire surveys, both bicycle and becak modes were safe as expressed by majority of these users. Because of longer waiting time, both bicycle riders and becak users did not want to use the public transport. Most of the becak drivers belong to the low income group with low education level, and about 50 % of the total drivers did not have their own house. Obstructions on the becak path was identified as the major reason for not using the becak path. Generally, becak owners were belong to moderate income group with intermediate education level. Some obtained the part-time job and most of them work as merchant. A negative attitude was observed in regard to the policy on fixing the rental fee by the authority. In all cases, a positive attitude was observed for the implementation and the improvement of becak facilities .
