AbstractFlexible manufacturing systems offer newer and better opportunities for increased productivity. However, their introduction entails a variety of planning and control problems, which have proved resistant to exact solutions. Recently extensive efforts have been focused on the application of artificial intelligence (Al) techniques to these problems. Planning and control of tool requirements, is one such problem which has been recognized to be essential for successful realization of the goals of flexible manufacturing. A typical system should be capable of selecting appropriate type of tools, locate the best tool among various plausible solutions, and provide strategic recommendation to the tool crib. We discuss here the design of an expert system to select the cutting tools for the machining of part families in a flexible manufacturing cell and attempts to determine the best possible tool, among various alternatives, using the analytical hierarchy process. Other features include a module for evaluating optimal machining parameters for the selected tool, and another module for tool allocation to machines, with an objective to reduce tool switches to a minimum. Majority of the past research do not consider the tool planning problem in totality and hence these exists a need for a system to integrate the functions of tool allocation, scheduling, and machining parameter optimization. The present research is an effort in this direction.
