AbstractResearch was conducted to investigate the performance of WSP (waste stabilization ponds) and AGWSP (attached-growth waste stabilization ponds) when fed with benzene and an industrial wastewater. The volatilization study was also carried out in the laboratory scale study to evaluate a pathway of benzene removal in the pond system. The experimental results obtained in this research revealed that the removal of benzene in ponds was due mainly to volatilization. Pond performance at the hydraulic retention time of 10 days was little affected with the benzene feeding concentrations of 50, 100, 200 and 500 mg/1. The benzene concentrations in the AGWSP effluent were found to be higher than those in the WSP effluent probably because the attached-growth media in the AGWSP unit affected the reaeration and water movement in the pond. When the AIT campus wastewater was mixed with the Nava Nakorn industrial wastewater containing some heavy metals at 10-25 % , the chlorophyll a in the AGWSP unit was influenced; while the COD removal efficiency was not much affected, indicating stability of the WSP and AGWSP units.
