Abstract | Purpose: Many firms struggle to successfully implement strategies for enhancing the environmental sustainability of their processes. This research aims to develop a model describing how firms translate green strategy into a superior green process innovation performance by drawing on the theories of green intellectual capital and complementary assets. Design/methodology/approach: Regression analysis of multi-source survey data collected from 514 managers in 257 firms (257 top management members and 257 safety or environmental managers) was used to test the hypotheses. Findings: Green strategic intent positively affects the three aspects of green intellectual capital (human, organizational, and relational capital). As a result, these three aspects have positive effects on green process innovation performance. Furthermore, green organizational capital positively moderates the effect of green relational capital on green process innovation performance, whereas it negatively moderates the effect of human capital on green process innovation performance. Practical implications: Managers need to develop their intangible resources to implement green strategy effectively. The more they invest in green organizational capital, the higher is the green process innovation performance will be. A firm’s green human capital is more important than its organizational and relational capital. Moreover, its organizational capital helps capture the benefits of its relational capital, but it impairs its human capital's creativity. Originality/value: The results contribute to the literature on green strategy implementation by suggesting a mediating role of green intellectual capital in the relationship between green strategic intent and green process innovation performance. |
