Abstract | Creating and enhancing innovation capability of the organizations is a strategic issue which is likely to be influenced by the top management team’s (TMT) characteristics. Unfortunately, little is known about mechanism through which TMT cognitive diversity influences innovation capability. The objective of this study is to explore the impact of cognitive diversity of the TMT on the ambidextrous innovation capability of the organization. The aim of this study is to answer two questions: (i) How the TMT cognitive diversity influences ambivalence interpretation? and (ii) How ambivalence interpretation by the TMT influences ambidextrous innovation capability? This research relies on the information processing perspective to explain how ambivalent interpretation shapes the information processing structure of the TMT, and finally, how this influences the innovation capabilities of the organization. The target sample for this study was the TMT in 50 organizations in the electronics industry. This study used a questionnaire survey and interview to collect data from 150 TMT members willing to participate in the research study. The AMOS software program version 22.0 is used to do the path analysis. Results showed that (i) a significant relationship between the cognitive diversity of the TMT and its ambivalent interpretation; (ii) a significant positive relationship between ambivalent interpretation and incremental innovation capability, and (iii) a significantly positive relationship between ambivalent interpretation and radical innovation capability. The study adds to the information processing perspective by revealing that having cognitive diversity among members of the TMT can enhance the information processing capability of the team through enhancement of ambivalent interpretation which, finally, lead to the ambidextrous innovation capability of the organization. |
