AbstractIn the direct reduction process, the steam reforming process consumes the largest portion of the total energy consumption in the plant. The reformer unit in Krakatau Steel plant consumes a lot of energy, more than its design point. The management has tried to improve the performance of the reforming process in order to reduce energy consumption. Since there are three important parameters dictating the performance of the process, efforts to improve performance should be pursued on those parameters. Reduction process, which depends on the reforming one, will gain advantages from the improvement made by the reformer unit. This study is intended to understand the process reforming and reduction processes better through energy modelling. Simulating the process will help to find the weakness of the present performance. While the modelling program developed does not try to optimize the energy consumption, it provides a better idea about the performance of the process involved. Running the program using the data collected in the plant indicates that the program seems to be good; it can imitate the process fairly well. The results from simulating the process do not differ too much-less than 8%-from the actual data.
