AbstractPhuket has experienced rapid growth of infrastructures as the results of the success in tourist promotion. Geotechnical aspects of land classification and land use were discussed. Shortage of water supply was seen as poor management. The waste disposal siting is not appropriate as it is located in the mangrove swamp. The town itself is located in the mined out alluvial valley. Flooding was very frequent in the past due to poor drainage facilities and siltation. Foundation practices are either pile foundation or spread footing. The terrains were classified according to the landform approach. The engineering properties of soils and rocks were given. The main natural hazards are flooding and slope failure. The city can be developed sustainably if consideration on carrying capacity and proper utilization of resources are made.
