Abstract | Quality is an "intangible product" which cannot be measured and observed as other tangible goods. It is often recognized through customer responses which contain considerable information delays. Management actions to balance quality and delivery consideration often result in underinvestment in the quality infrastructure. This creates product sales largely driven by low price and small delivery delay rather than by quality. This may often stifle growtli. A system dynamics model is built to capture the main functions of the quality management system commonly practiced in business organizations. It covers a main model of the "Limits to Growth" in a business organization dealing with the balancing of quality & volqme, and several submodels, each representing a different decision making function addressing quality improvement. Simulation experiments with this model show that little improvement occurs when the submodels representing the quality-related decision making functions are progressively added. It implies that the quality problem from the subconscious daily management transactions and that the external remedial actions have limited effectiveness in improving the system. Experiments with the model send a clear message that creating a learning organization is extremely important for creating a sustainable commitment to quality. Besides, the management should pay more attention in gearing up employees' motivation. They should ease off on relying on quality improvement packages but attempt to create an organizatioh incorporating conscious day to day decisions directed toward maintaining a quality conscious organiz~tion. |
