AbstractBoth design and planning of Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS) calls for very careful consideration of system design and planning parameters in order to realize the full productive capability of such systems. The FMSs considered in this study are the systems which use modular fixtures to hold and locate the parts in correct relation to the processing tool throughout the operation. This study focusses on the development of a methodology for the application of Closed Queuing Network (CQN) modeling for the performance evaluation of FMS using modular fixtures such as production throughput, workstation utilizations, etc. The CQN model used in this study is Mean Value Analysis (MVA). The study has also been extended for the computation of optimum number of modular fixtures to be provided subject to a number of practical constraints. To help decision making process, suitable data bases have been designed for the data concerning production facilities, product data, fixture components, and fixture allocation plan. The effectiveness of the system designed for this purpose has been demonstrated through a case study.
