Abstract | The problems identified in Sukhothai Groundwater Development Project (zone I) are the water distribution problems resulting in decreased irrigation efficiency and cropping intensity. An evaluation study has been done to assess the performance of the project, considering the physical and economic aspects. Long-term water balance study in Yorn basin is conducted to determine the potential recharge to the aquifer underlying the project area, assuming that the recharge to the basin is same as the recharge to the project area. Monthly and annual project water requirements for the existing cropping pattern and cropping intensity are computed. Techniques of economic analysis are used to investigate the profitability of the project; and a linear programming model is developed to propose an optimal cropping pattern, acceptable to the farmers. The computed natural groundwater recharge is 135 mm/yr which is about 11 percent of the annual rainfall. The present trend of water supply is found to satisfy the present demand of the project. The results of project analysis show that the project is neither financially nor economically profitable. The sensitivity analysis shows that economic internal rate of return (EIRR) of the project is 7.6 percent and the project will be economically profitable if the present level of production is increased by 26.4 percent. The optimal cropping intensity is 161 percent which is 64.7 percent more than the existing one. This will make the project economically profitable. |
