Abstract | Unlike three axis machining, In five axis machining the flexibility in tool orientation in space is extremely high. In order to obtain the full advantage of the five-axis machining, the CAM system must have the similar flexibility in tool orientation. Unfortunately, most of the CAM systems which support five ax.is machining, available on the market today do not provide the required flexibility. The centrifugal Impeller is a perfect example of a part which can be efficiently designed and manufactured with the help of a computer. The ideal blade would be composed of an arbitrary number of individually loaded stream lines, and represents a very general three-dimensional blade surf ace. Impeller casting patterns are very difficult to manufacture, particularly when close tolerance have to be made, when the surface of the blade has an arbitrary shape, or when impeller size is small. Therefore machining, these types of complex shapes requires a CAM system having a high degree of flexibility in tool orientation. The use of programming language is one . of the best methods for eliminating the drawbacks of existing CAD/CAM systems and for obtaining the flexibility required in five axis machining. This study explains how this flexibility is obtained using Graphics Interactive Programming Language for modelling and machining a family of impellers. |
