Abstract | This study investigated the uses of the object-oriented approach and the feature-based concept in product data representation and product modeling for the CAD and CAM integration. An object-oriented feature-based scheme is developed to represent features. The basic design elements in modeling processes are termed feature objects. Geometric validation checking procedures and the knowledge for design and manufacturing are bound to the feature objects. A prototype system for rotational part design is implemented in a C++ environment based on the object-oriented scheme. It helps the user to design toward manufacturing and speed up the design process. A feature-based product database is obtained. It captures the complete information needed by process planning. The features used in the design stage are mapped to the manufacturing features for the easy use by a process planner. It is observed that the object-oriented scheme provides an effective way for feature representation and manipulation. Advantages of the object oriented approach such as encapsulation, polymorphism and inheritance can be exploited. The design and manufacturing knowledge embedded can provide intelligence for the product modeler and help to realize the concept of concurrent design and manufacturing. |
