Selection of an automated inspection system using multi-attribute decision analysis

AbstractThe purpose of this research is to study and investigate the important characteristics of Automated Inspection Devices which are commonly available in Thailand. The findings of this investigation is expected to lead towards the development of a suitable methodology for the selection of an automated inspection device for use in FMS. As the problem of selecting the inspection device can be treated as a problem involving multi attribute decision making one of the important techniques know as Preference Ranking Organization METHod for Enrichment Evaluations (PROMETHEE) was used. The study is composed of two parts. First part deals with the application of questionnaire through personnel interviews to get opinions, decide the weights, obtain the type of generalized criteria for all parameters needed in PROMETHEE. The people selected for interview were professionals consultants, professors in academic institutions and experts from manufacturing industry. By using the questionnaire, the information obtained was analyzed using PROMETIIEE Model. The second part deals with info1mation analysis by the use of PROMETHEE Model. Under PROMETHEE Model all criteda are analyzed for the alternatives and the weights assigned. We can also formulate the combination of constraints for use in the model. The results have shown that there are some significant difference in prioritizing or weight but the first selection is similar to unweight. This implies that if we accommodate weight and constraint factors for the evaluation of Automated Inspection Device, the selected device gives is more realistic. As demonstrated, the PROMETHEE proves to be an effective tool in evaluating the Automated Inspection Device.
