Abstract | With rapid technological advancement, the customer requirements are getting more and more diversified and competition for greater market share is increasing tremendously. Jobshop type production facilities can contribute significantly in meeting the widely varied customer demands. Production Planning and Scheduling methods greately influence the performance of jobshops. Dispatching rules are the most important decisions to make in the day to day scheduling and can contribute a lot to the perfo1mance of jobshops. In this study, seven commonly used favorite dispatching rules have been investigated on a real life jobshop environment through simulation. Several practical issues like sequence dependent set-up time, transit time, loading and unloading time, machine breakdown and repair time etc. has been incorporated in the simulation program. The simulation was performed using the special simulation language SIMAN. The comparative effectiveness of the rules has been measured against four different performance criteria. Two types of due date assignment rule has also been applied to asses the sensitivity of the rules on due date estimation method. Based on the simulation results it is possible to specify in order of merit the dispatching decision rules most appropriate to BMTF who at the moment do not use any recognized dispatching rules and decide such issues arbitrarily based on past experience. |
