AbstractThe impact of demand uncertainties upon Material Requirements Planning(MRP) production system was investigated through the introduction of forecast errors in the Master Production Schedule(MPS). The MPS here was taken to be similar to forecasted demands. The degree to which cost consequences were explained by typical forecast error measures such as mean squared error, mean absolute deviation, and bias was a l so studied thoroughly. A computerized simulation was developed to examine several questions. Results indicated that forecasting error, especially the mean error, does impact MRP system inventory costs and shortages;the greater the forecast error the greater the shortages. An exception to this general relationship was that a slight positive forecast bias particularly for the combination of L4L with other lot-sizing rules may improve MRP system performance. Similar situation WdS also observed in the IPPA combinations of lot-sizing rules where the the maximum positive bias considered in this study resulted in reduced cost. Lot-sizing rul es were also found to affect total MRP system inventory costs and shortages. A good permutation of lo~ siz ing rules is the EOQ-IPPA for negative bias and L4L-IPPA for positive bias. The study results also suggested that within MRP environments the predictive capabilities of forecast-error measures a~e contingent on the lot-sizing rules. When forecast errors were coanalyzed through regression, bias emerged as having reasonable predictive ability. Based on this study, suggestions are presentGd for the production managers'consideration ,especially the inventory-production control manager.
