Abstract | The wave of industrialization and subsequent economic upheavals among the ASEAN countries put Thailand in the stiff competition of trade particularly for those industry which promotes export market. Being competitive in trade, the country should develop policies for export based indusuies as well as for import substitution industries on the basis of Comparative Advantage. In this study, an attempt has been made to evaluate the indusufos of Thailand in terms of Comparative Advantage using the Domestic Resource Cost concept. A total of 40 selected industries from different sectors have been undertaken in the study to compare the degree of comparative advantage. The spectrum of industries selected ranges from light and medium size to heavy industries like Petroleum & Refining in order to gain a good comparison over a wider horizon of variability in the nature of production. Since the existence of distortions in the product and factor market may nullify the validity of the data analysis, necessary adjustment for distortions, shadow wage rate etc. have therefore, been taken care of while calculating the degree of comparative advantage. The DRC results for the industries are finally analyzed to find out the degree of Comparative Advantage vis-a-vis the comparative disadvantage as an aid to select the candidate industry with comparative advantage. By ranking the DRC ratio in this study, it shows that Thailand has comparative advantage in ten out of forty industries. |
