AbstractAs technology plays an important role in a firm's capability to survive and compete, steps for technological capability development are urgently needed. However prior to that attempt, a diagnostic effort should be conducted to find the status of a firm's technological capability. This paper is an effort to develop a methodology for assessing a firm's technological capability. It classifies technological capability into four categories namely, operative, acquisitive, innovative, and supportive capability. These categories are, then, broken down into seventeen elements and thirty indicators of technological capability. These indicators may then be S:litably aggregated to present overall capability level. A qualitative approach using a scoring procedure for assessing technological capability is also suggested for use in case data to compute the proposed quantitative indicators is not available. In order to demonstrate its applicability, the methodology was applied in an integrated iron and steel company in Indonesia. The results show that the approach provides useful insights in identifying weaknesses and strengths in the elements of technological capability thereby providing useful information for decision makers to take corrective action.
