AbstractSatellite data can be a good source of data for regional planning by providing a quick synoptic view of the problem in a time series after it has been digitally processed and ana l yzed with a Geographi cal Information System (GIS). This study illustrates how satellite images can be used to detect landuse changes in s hrimp farm areas of Chanthaburi Province between 1988-1991. It was discovered that in 1988, half of the existing s hrimp farm areas were already utilised as shrimp farms. About twenty-two percent of the previous landuse were under paddy/grassland areas and about twenty-three percent were previously under mangrove areas. Of the total mangrove areas, about eighty percent were already in a degraded condition by 1988. In terms of location, the s hrimp farms sta rted as extensive s hrimp farms in Mae Nam Wel u and later spread to Takad Ngao and Ao Kok Nok as inten s ive shri mp farms for black tiger prawns becomes very profitable. The extensive shrimp farms whic h d e pend on tidal flow need s to be near to the s horeline ( c ut-off point at about 2.5 km. from the shoreline). Whereas, the new intensive shrimp farms with artificial inputs can be located up to about a kilometer further inland. By knowing the locational patterns of s hrimp farms, one can have a bette r understanding of how shrimp farms will grow and with other technical s tudies and socio-economic s urveys, appropriate policy instruments can be designed to control the distribution of s hrimp farms vis- a-vis conservation policies for coastal zone management.
