AbstractThis research study seeks to analyse the accessibility of public a nd social services and their spatial distribution in the western Chanthabury province with special emphasis on the reserved forest area of the province. It may be mentioned that in recent years politicians, planners a nd policy makers have become very much concerned with the spatial aspects of development. The provision of services through service centres specially in r ural areas has been given much attention as a strategy of rura l development, where majority of people live in developing contries. Therefore this research study tries to a nalyse the situation in the reserved forest area of western Chanthaburi in this di rection. Since the availability of services both lower a nd hig her order is essential for e nhan cing the living standard of the people, in this study attention has been focussed on the Education, Health, Post and Telecommun ication , Banking and Marketing spects in the area. To provide public and social services government has to spend more money for the construction of buildings, provision of equipments, services and the staff. Hence it i s needed to locate these faci lities in most suitable locations in order to serve the majority of the people in the area. This research study found that though the settlements established in the reserved forest area are illegal the governme nt has accepted and provided some basic facilities to the area for the betterment of the people. It is also found that the transport ne tworks in the reserved forest area is still very little deve loped . Therefore a ma jority of the people are cut off from i mport a nt social, public and personnel serv ices located outside the area. To overcome this situation to a greater extent this study shows the importance of establishing a rural service centre to provide the higher order services in order to enhance the livin g s t andard of rural population in the area . This research study was completed as part of the requirements for the SPRING (Asia) programme. SPRING, an acronym for Spatia l Palnning for Regions in Growing Economies, is an H.Sc programme jointly offered by A.I.T and the University of Dortmund, Germany. Und er the SPRING programme, a research study carrying 12 credits, must be conceptualized and completed within only one t erm, i.e from 1 J a nu ary to 3 1 Marc h. Preferably the topic s hould be re l ated to the preceding District Deve lopment workshop . The SPRING programme thus differs from other H.Sc programmes at A. I . T where most of the students write a thesis which spans at least 8 months
