AbstractA new type of semi-active tuned mass damper (SATMD) is developed hereĀ· in this study. The SA TMD is consisted of passive TMD and active control force acting between mass and support of the damper, and the control force is assumed to be nonlinear feedback function of response of structure and TMD. Unlike other previous works, the nonlinear feedback control function is developed from the understanding of structure-TMD interaction; the feedback force is designed such that the effective natural frequency of TMD can be adaptively change to be tuned to the excitation frequency, and consequently, maximum efficiency in vibration reduction can be maintain over wide range of excitation frequency. The feedback algorithm is similar to the Phase-Locked Loops algorithm which is widely used in several electronic circuits. Once, the feedback algorithm has been developed, extensive numerical simulations on the response of SDOF structure-SATMD system, subjected to harmonic loading, were conducted to verify the concept. It was found that the SA TMD system is more effective than TMD in reducing the response of structure. Moreover, the effectiveness of SA TMD can be increased several times by only reducing its viscous damping coefficient. Therefore, the size of SA TMD can be much smaller than TMD while maintaining similar effectiveness. Another advantage of SATMD is its reliability and robustness; it was found that the SATMD works effectively even when it is applied to structure which natural frequency is not accurately known.
