AbstractIn the event of large earthquake, it often inflicts heavy damages to structures and not to mention sometimes many loss of lives. Eventhough it is accepted there is nothing inherently random about earthquakes, it has not been possible until the present to predict in a deterministic way the magnitude and locations of future earthquakes. Thus, in the region where the design of structures is controlled by earthquake effects, it is important to grasp the characteristics of earthquake occurrence probabilistically and incorporate this into the determination of design value. In the past study, a computer program has been developed for obtaining design value of seismic response spectra which takes into consideration the probabilistic characteristics of earthquake occurrence. It was found out that the obtained design value varied considerably on what scope of the data or on how many earthquake records were used in the statistical analysis. This problem is due to the possibility of escape of earthquake record in the past centuries. The present study is conducted to discuss how the escape of earthquake record should be considered in the statistical determination of design value for earthquake effects. The records of earthquake which occurred during year 679 to 1990 A.D. in Japan are used and acceleration response spectra for highway bridge was chosen as the sample space in the statistical analysis. First, few typical regions in Japan were selected based on the consideration of the characteristics of earthquake occurrences of the overall country. Based on the results with respect to these places subjective criteria was formulated which three important factors are taken into account; mean occurrence rate of earthquake, number of data used in the statistical analysis and magnitude of the design value. Empirical equation which determines what scope of data is to be used in the determination of design value then is derived from these criteria. The effectiveness of the developed empirical equation is verified by applying it to other different places.
