Abstract | Technology, a vital force in the competitive environment of the modern firm is a "missing link" in corporate strategy. The importance of technology to corporations is evident. corporations producing products or services mus t make decisions on their technology when they design products; plan services; choose equipment and processes; and device operating facilities, distribution and information systems. To gain competitive advantage through the use of complex, costly and rapidly changjng technology, firms need to manage technology strategically. Lessons from superlatively performing Japanese and leading North American and European companies show that technological mastery can be the key to corporate success. Moreover technology is now emerging as the driving force tor establishing the corporate strategy of the more 'progrensive entrepreneurial corporations in these countries. But the state- of- the-art for technology management at the corporate level has not advanced yet as far as it for finance, accounting and marketing . This study on integration of technological cons iderations to corporate strategy suggests number of ways to instill the essence of technology to the strategic planning process. 1~ese interventions are intimated in t he industry structure attractiveness analysis, core competences assessment , evaluation of synergy building opportunities through pooling of competences, and technological competence based d:lversif ica tibn strategies. Furthermore typical problems encountered in t he developing country context with regard to corporate level stra tegy have been studied with a case study undertaken ].n Sri Lanka. The s tate of corporate s trategy practice in this diversified company has been critically examined f ram the stand point of the findings of this study and some useful strategy prescriptions are suggested for l eap frogging to better strategic management practices to meet the future chal l enges. |
