AbstractThe dearth of successful cases of strategic use of Information Technology (IT) in the construction industry has led to an investigation on the use and impacts of IT in this industry in the three countries of Spain, France and the United Kingdom. An industry- wide study on the use of IT reveals that IT had not saturated the industry. The firms in the industry, except for a small percentage, have not reached the stage where they have explicit policies to make use of the potential of IT to gain competitive advantage. Tills, however, is mainly due to the fact that the construction industry has unique characteristics which retard the growth of IT in this industry. Some hindrances to the rapid growth of IT in the industry are given. To gain deeper insights on the impacts of IT on construction firms, case stuclles of six companies which have experiences of using IT in a systematic and strategic manner are conducted. These studies show that the fim1s gained valuable benefits in terms of gaining competitive advantage and improved business performance from using IT. The analysis of the impacts of IT on the finns studied is facilitated by the use of The Technology Impact G1id, a model developed in this study. A working definition of IT is also derived
