| Abstract | The status of the engineering sector can provide a useful indicator of the technological capabilities of a nation. This study is aimed at assessing the technological capabilities of the engineering consultancy companies in a Malaysia with a focus on their building and construction engineering design capabilities. Focus has been placed on engineering design because it probably exceeds, in Malaysia, all other services rendered by most consulting engineers. A sin1ple model comprising of four indicators was developed to provide measures of the technological capability of the engineering consultancy companies. Data for this purpose was collected from these companies through the administration of a questionnaire and interviews. The application of the model shows that the Malaysian engineering consulting companies have attained high capability in both low and medium design sophistication but are able to undertal(e design works of high sophistication only by taking on foreign collaboration. Policy interventions that could help the engineeling consultancy industry to upgrade their status are outlined. |
